The pigeon has mainly red muscle fibers. These have a small diameter and are very rich in myoglobin (red muscle pigment) and even richer in mitochondria, where aerobic energy recovery occurs (energy recovery mainly with the use of oxygen). Red muscle fibers are extremely well supplied with blood, the use of the energy supplied is very efficient compared to the work performed and the recovery period after intense physical exertion is shorter than in an animal that has mainly white muscle fibers.

Musculature – training capacity – oxygen need
Energy recovery in muscle fibers can occur more quickly if intense training is already taking place before the start of the campaign. Pigeons must be well managed from the beginning. A pigeon in very good condition has an improved metabolism and can therefore better supply its muscles with energy. Well-trained muscles have a higher level of efficiency and, therefore, better use of energy reserves.

The pigeon requires approximately 5 times the amount of oxygen as a human just at rest. During the flight, metabolism increases another 10 times. This makes it clear how important the ability to transport acids as quickly as possible is
fats (energy carriers) and oxygen from the blood to the muscle cells, for the pigeon's performance. The faster the process occurs, the more energy the pigeon can burn per unit of time, which results in flying performance.
