Properties

Probiotics are foods that contain certain microorganisms in sufficient quantities to alter or modify the intestinal flora. They have beneficial effects on animal health. In acute diarrhea, they reduce its severity, shortening its duration and intensity. They are also used to prevent diarrheal diseases associated with antibiotic use.

Antibiotic treatments alter the intestinal flora and can allow the overgrowth of undesirable bacteria. In these situations, Enterococcus faecium acidifies the environment to produce lactic acid. This lactic acid inhibits the growth of potentially pathogenic bacteria and promotes the development of beneficial lactic acid bacteria.
