Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant that facilitates the production of energy by mitochondria and plays an essential role in the proper functioning of heart tissue and in the maintenance of cognitive faculties. This coenzyme has a sparing effect on vitamin E use and synergizes its stimulating effect on immune function.

The essential action of vitamin E is to protect the phospholipids of cell membranes from peroxidation: it actively participates in the structure of the membrane, forming complexes that stabilize it and prevent very destructive chain reactions. It works synergistically with other antioxidant systems, including the enzymes glutathione peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase.

Selenium is needed by the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which removes peroxides.

Vitamin E and selenium deficiency leads to damage to the cell walls of muscle fibers and the membranes of intracellular organelles (including mitochondria).
